Eurobot 2010 - Feed the World

Czech National Cup is co-organized by
Charles University, Prague
(Department of software engineering, Faculty of Mathematics and Physics)

and
Robonika Association

2010 Edition

In 2010, the theme is called "Feed the World". The robot have to help people harvest frouts and vegetables; the one who helps the most, wins.

Czech Cup of Eurobot contest will be held in Prague together with other activities during the Robotic Day on April 30 - May 2, 2009. Three best Czech teams advance to the Finale, where they will compete with teams from other countries. Foreign teams are warmly welcomed to take part in Czech Cup, however they cannot advance to the Finale based on their results in Prague.
List of teams registered in 2010: teams 2010.

Czech Cup Schedule:
Friday 30/4: Homologations
Saturday 1/5: "Robotic day" - public event (matches for Eurobot, Starter, miniSumo, other robotic activities)
Sunday 2/5: Teams' workshop (presentations and discussions, for which there is no time before and during the matches...)

Eurobot Czech National Cup is open for non-Czech teams. It means other teams are welcomed and we will be very happy to host them (however they cannot qualify for Eurobot Finale this way). If you want to take part -- or just ponder about it -- please send us an e-mail! We strongly encourage you to come to our lovely city of Prague. Besides other things, it is a very good way how to test your robot in real before going to the Finale ;-)
As the date is approaching fast, please let us know asap so that we can arrange the accomodation for you. We know how to do it really cheap, but it must be done in advance.

Starter category

In addition to Eurobot contest, the Czech NOC organizes the Starter category for younger robot makers (up to 18 years or end of secondary school). Their task is easier, as they build non-autonomous remote controlled robots. Czech NOC organizes this category based on Eurobot rules, so that the younger pariticipants are able to take part in the contest and also so that introduction of the new category does not mean organizing a completely different contest (see the rules below). The matches in both categories, Eurobot and Starter, will happen during our traditional "Robotic Day". As we think this is a good way how the younger teams may participate, we would like to invite foreign teams to come and meet other European teams in Prague. If you want to participate, let us know at "info". You may also try to contact your NOC to find out whether this category is organized in your country too (the contacts are at Eurobot pages: 2010 national cups).

The official rules:

Eurobot

The 2010 edition of Eurobot contest rules can be downloaded in the following languages:
English (local backup), Czech.

Starter

The rules for the Starter category are based on Eurobot rules (see previous paragraph) with the following exceptions / additions:

1. The participants must be below 18 years old (or until the last year of the high school).
2. The team may be supervised by one older person (the teacher, parent, club leader etc.), however the robot must be completelly designed and created by the team members, not by the supervisor.
3. The robot will be operated by one team member - the pilot, who will use a control panel attached by electrical wire to the robot. The only control may be done using this panel and the wire, no other remote control system are allowed.
4. The control cable must be at least 5m long and will be hold in the air by a co-pilot. The co-pilot must not interact with the robot or its power sources, and the cable must not be used mechanically for robot control (for example to tow or rotate it). Should that happen, the team would be penalized.
5. The teams must pay attention to correctly choose the electrical cable with respect to the power it transfers. We also strongly recommend to protect the electrical circuitry by fuses located close to the power source.
6. There will be one electrical socket (220V) for each team close to the playing field, which may be used to obtain the electricity needed to power the robot using an appropriate power adapter. The teams may also use the batteries, but we would like to note that only hermetic batteries are allowed (i.e. no ordinary car batteries).
7. No part of the control panel, the wire and the robot may contain freely accessible electricity (contacts, live wires). Especialy, the power source (e.g. adapter or battery) clips cannot be bare and must be covered.
8. As the robot is controlled by the pilot, it does not have to comply to the 4th paragraph of chapter 4.1 ("The robot is a fully autonomous machine. It shall carry its own power source, actuators and control system.") and does not have to have the Starting cord (chapter 4.5.1). The systems defined in chapters 4.5.3 (Automatic shut down) a 4.5.4 (Obstacle avoidance system) are not compulsory, but the pilot must drive the robot accordingly. Missing Robot localization beacon support (chap. 4.5.5) would cause disqualification only in case the opponent proves it is vital for correct work of their robot (however, we recomment the teams to build such beacon support, as it would allow playing friendly matches with autonomous robots). The technical poster (chap. 4.5.6) is compulsory, but it may be bilingual (team's native language + English). The English part might be briefer, but it has to provide sufficient information about the team and its robot.

The rest of the Eurobot rules remains valid; in case of doubts, the referee's decision is final. Therefore we recommend to ask about ambigue rules using email "info". Any future amendments would be published here at this place.

Eurobot History:

The Eurobot contest runs since 1998, i.e. already for more than 10 years, but even before that, 4 more years of French robotics cup existed. Since 2004 Czech National Cup is organized too. Czech teams take part in Eurobot contest since 2001 - in 2002 the joint Czech-Irish team placed 17th and was awarded the „Creativity prize“, in 2003 two Czech teams placed 7th and 21st and one of them was awarded the „Best Concept Prize“. In 2004, the Czech teams placed 4th, 14th, and 26th. In 2005, the Czech teams placed even better - thay have placed 2nd, 12th, and 35th; for more information, see the 2005 pages. In 2006, Czech teams placed 4-8th, 18th, and 21st, and the Robotec team was awarded the Fair Play Prize.
Since 2004, the Czech National Cup is also held, and number of teams is always increasing - from the first team in 2001 to 16 teams in 2006 and we are expecting further growth.
